Film Screening: 2 Spirit, Queer and Trans Perspectives on the Prison Industrial Complex

London Friday, January 31st, 2014
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

London, Ontario’s 2nd Annual Prisoners Justice Film Festival (PJFF) is from January 23rd – February 7th, 2014!

The Prison Industrial Complex (PIC) is increasingly used to deal with social and economic problems, by criminalizing communities impacted by poverty, racism, colonialism, sexism, homophobia, and ableism. Join us on the evening of the 31st in the London Central Library – Stevenson & Hunt B Room, for films relating to queer, trans, and 2-spirited perspectives.

Films are screening all week on different topics, full program can be found here: http://prisonjusticefilm.wordpress.com/2014-program/

The festival takes place on the lands of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabek, Huron-Wendat, and Attawandaron Peoples. All events are free (donations welcome), wheelchair accessible, and scent-reduced—please do not use or wear scented products, including essential oils. We are working hard to ensure we have ASL and that films are closed captioned. Please email us should you have any questions about this. Childcare will be made available to those who contact us prior to the event. Please contact us (PJFFLondon@gmail.com) with any questions or concerns regarding accessibility.

Canadian Trans Youth Survey

Nation-wide Friday, December 20th, 2013, 6:00 pm -
Saturday, March 1st, 2014, 7:00 pm

We are a team of health researchers from the University of British Columbia and other universities across Canada, and we invite youth between the age of 14-25 to participate in this anonymous survey. The health issues facing trans youth may be different from other youth and we want to make sure that the voice of trans youth is heard. We will use the results of this survey to improve trans youth health services and programs throughout Canada.

This survey is completely anonymous and may take up to 60 minutes to complete. It is only available online and can be completed in French or English.

Visit www.transyouthsurvey.ca to access the survey.

Working with Gender Independent Children and Youth
With Dr. Joey Bonifacio

More and more, we are being asked to provide support for children, adolescents and families who have questions and/or challenges regarding gender identity. This workshop will address the need for integrated services that are informed by such issues as questioning gender identity, coming out, potential risk for suicide, protective factors and creating resiliency when working with gender independent children and youth. The training aims to increase awareness and understanding from a best practice perspective. Dr. Bonifacio will be the medical lead of a transgender clinic starting this fall at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
About Our Presenters
Originally from Vancouver, Dr. Bonifacio completed his general pediatrics and Chief pediatric residency at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. He completed his Social Pediatrics fellowship in Montreal working with visually-impaired children, new immigrant youth, and adolescents with gender dysphoria. He then completed his Adolescent Medicine fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario. He is a staff adolescent medicine physician at St. Michael’s Hospital and Sick Kids and will be the medical lead of a transgender clinic at Sick Kids starting this fall. He provides medical care at Evergreen, a youth agency for street and street-involved youth, and Covenant House, Canada’s largest shelter for homeless youth. His interests include new immigrant teens, homeless and street-involved youth, and LGBT adolescents. Joey completed his AB (Cornell), MD (UBC), MSc (McGill, Bioethics), MPH (Harvard) and is finishing his MA (U of T, Medical Anthropology).
