Thank you, TransPULSE, for all of your amazing work.

We cited the lifetime suicide attempt rate of 43% among trans people in our article about suicide protective factors among trans adults. We also cited the following in our section about suicide risk factors among trans people: “Scanlon et al. (2010) found that, of the participants who reported experiencing suicidal ideation in the past year, 47% had experienced physical or sexual assault at some point in their lives due to being trans. Of the participants who reported attempting suicide in the past year, 29% had experienced physical or sexual assault at some point due to being trans.”

I am a student at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC, and I currently have an article under review, entitled “How stigma from nurses affects access to health care resources for transgender sex workers.” I found this website today and quickly edited my article to include the statistic that “21% of trans Ontarians” reported avoiding visiting the ER because of fear of discrimination based on their trans status. It has been near-impossible to collect Canadian data on this topic, so it was wonderful to find some!

Not only are we helping draw media coverage to poor ER conditions by using TransPULSE data: http://www.am980.ca/2014/03/24/15587/

But the interest has also generated changes in our population health curriculum, where we now have the option to write about transgender health care in our end of year assignment.

Additionally, our transcare video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlW6TiSR2BY
has won an honorary mention in the AFMC Learning Tools Challenge (placing it amongst the top 10 primers entered in the contest).

Thank you for all your hard-work, as it is helping us expand our knowledge and our medical curriculum.

Cheers.

Medical Queeries presenting Transcare initiatives, is an empowering educational film that provides healthcare workers with an opportunity to better understand and reflect upon the needs of the transgender community. The film features a transgender individual who focuses on approaches healthcare providers (particularly physicians and nurses) can consider to improve transcare management. After viewing this video, the audience should be able to define transgender, transcare, and develop self-awareness of how to combat transgender barriers to healthcare.
